Happy Mother’s Day peoples…. I hope you all are doing well.
There have been discussion over the past few days and before I start to explain just know it’s the usual culprits that love to promote hate and segregation who seem to have an issue with this. I never come from a place of hatred.
In Jamaica there is a competition somewhat like American Idol called “Magnum Kings And Queens” where Jamaican’s get to vote for the best Male and Female performer/dancehall singer/artist. Similar to many other competitions the fans vote by text etc. You know the drill.
Well this year there is a Japanese Artist named Rankin Pumpkin who is still in the competition. Each week she makes it through to the next round. And the longer she stays in this competition the more aggravated people seem to be getting. Why? Well now her nationality has come under scrutiny.
Other artists who are NOT in the competition, have started to voice their concerns on social media regarding her even being allowed and each week she survives the more concerned other dancehall artists become. Here is one of her performances recently where even Bounty Killa got excited.
You all know where I stand when it comes to these kinds of topics. If a Non-Jamaican national is allowed to ENTER then they should be allowed to WIN. I know that Soca Monarch’s in each of the islands have different stipulations as it pertains to Non-Nationals. But once a Non-National is allowed to enter they are allowed to win.
The fact that Non-Jamaican’s want to do Dancehall and Reggae is actually something that the average Jamaican should be much more happier about than angry about. Why? Because the more people you have listening to Dancehall and Reggae the better chance the genre has of progressing and getting recognition by various entities. The more money that invests into the genre the more powerful it becomes. If you only want Jamaican’s singing Dancehall and Reggae the LESS money artists will make. Trust me it’s just that simple.
When you want to exclude others from participating, they will then not support. I don’t know why this is a difficult concept to grasp.
The culture vulture conversation makes no sense. A Japanese person coming to Jamaica to sing Dancehall music does what exactly? Can they go back to Japan and act like they invited Dancehall? Would anyone believe them? I think that anyone has the right to sing any type of music they want. Irregardless (which isn’t a word I know) of their race, gender, ethnicity, class… and I could go on.
If Rankin Pumpkin is good enough to win then she should. She shouldn’t NOT win because she’s NOT Jamaican.
