Now you know how Babbzy drop’s it. Those who get offended easily well just don’t bother reading this.
This year there will be No OFFICIAL Sting. Yes, the once epic stage show reduced to rumours of being on the lawn of Devon’s House and in Laing’s backyard. Don’t laugh. The thing real dread iyah.
Now a couple of years back, I called this. Check my youtube channel if you don’t believe I and I http://bit.ly/2fkyHjp. Everyone called me badmind. Throughout all of that we have reached this day where:
- There is NO STING 2016
- There is rumblings that next year it will be bigger and better. I find that hard to believe.
Now people may want to know what makes me a Sting Expert. Well as a fan I have been following Sting since I could remember. Back in the 90’s we couldn’t get those tapes til sometimes March or April. Maybe a bit sooner if we had friends that went to Jamaica earlier and was able to get the VHS tape. For less fortunate folks like myself, I had to then get that VHS converted into a BetaMax tape. Yes, people BETAMAX.
As a fan of the music in earlier times, I always saw things from the fan angles. Which is really the angle of glitz and glamour. As a fan, we may see the odd “issue” but as most things with a PR team you can cover almost any scandal/issue. It was almost being in HEAVEN when this whole stream/pay per view thing came about. Now you could actually see the event live and feel like you were there.
Fast forward to becoming a blogger and actually experiencing STING LIVE. That was Sting 2011 where Tony Matterhorn literally DESTROYED Twins of Twins. The Twins choked so badly I was so shocked. I was so excited to be at an actual Sting (you may find that funny but as a child growing up that seemed very out of reach for me) I didn’t pay attention to much else. I attended a few more Stings after that first one and I began to realize that the BRAND is in serious trouble.
The year I knew things were BAD is when some of the “In-Between-Acts” entertainment was the Teachers Pet Twins coming out on stage naked basically performing a strip show (with their injected batty I had to put that in there c’mon now). Sting was NEVER about that type of crap. And it got worse. With Downsound being THE major sponsor, the first thing was to make sure all their artists had significant stage time. Artists that really are still in the vetting period there was no way that these entry level artists could have carried enough hype for Sting. Not to be rude. But it is what it is.
After that I was shocked that a show to this magnitude was SOOOO disorganized. I would have thought that 3 decades later it should be a breeze to execute STING… boy… was I wrong!!!
I seen Laing and Heavy D on interviews regarding why their is no Sting this year. I don’t totally agree with their verdict.
A show the size of STING cannot be derailed by unruly artists. This is something that I truly feel is being stretched for media appeal. Stating that there are NO ARTISTS in Jamaica that could have headlined Sting is NONSENSE. This conversation that Dancehall is locked away with Vybz Kartel is a message that needs to stop being spread like wildfire. This is not true. At least not 100%.
Years ago I said that STING needs to expand and become an international competition. The reason why I suggested this is because I could see the writing on the wall. The same exact show for 3 decades. Shit, even the SIMPSONS have new writers. I can see these things from afar, call me crazy, but my actual CAREER job outside of blogging is a Senior Business Analyst for over 10+ years. I am generally brought into organizations to look at their current I.T. processes and look to re-engineer them for improvement. I could clearly see that Sting was operating on exhaust fumes.
Laing also stated that sponsors are not interested in sponsoring Sting and are afraid. I don’t feel that it is 100%. I don’t know many sponsors that would shy away from money. Yes some of the sponsors wanted cursing free segments etc. I get that. But there would still be some room for negotiation with sponsors. I feel Laing is one of the reasons sponsors don’t want to sponsor. I can feel his attitude through the television. But if Laing had opened Sting to international artists to compete, he would have been able to attract international sponsors and not even have to worry about local sponsors. Bunji Garlin, Peter Ram just to name a few would be able to seriously compete with Dancehall artists as well as have sponsors that wouldn’t have had any issue to back them in the competition.
I could give much more ideas but I will stop here. I just want people to know that it is not just 1 factor that lead to the demise of Sting. It’s usually internal issues that cause ANY company to fall apart, and I am willing to believe that this situation is no different!!
I hope that Sting can be saved but right now it doesn’t look good. I wish them luck though!!
