I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday period. As you know I don’t really celebrate Christmas but any gifts you want to give good ole hard face Babbzy would be immaculate 🙂
I have had a chance to go through so much of the new Soca over the past few days. Now I know that a good amount of the songs this year do NOT sound like “Soca”, however, I will not be doing that discussion today. I will save it for another day.
I realized that there are a lot of collaboration tracks coming out for 2017 Trinidad Carnival. Which is cool. But I feel like there is way more than normal this year. Which is odd. There are also a lot of non-soca-artist Soca songs which is giving me the feeling like there is some kind of waggon-ist movement going on. Don’t get me wrong. Artists from any genre can do songs IN any genre but when I hear some of these songs I don’t get the feeling that these songs are being done because these artists truly love Soca. I feel like there is an attempt to get a buzz and jump on the wave.
Jumping on a wave is fine. Most people would want to do that. The problem is that there isn’t a balance right now of the different types of Soca songs that normally come out. There is usually a very good balance of Pace songs, Groovy Songs, Fusion Songs and even Ragga Soca Songs. Right now with the number of collabs coming out, most of these songs are falling in the Fusion category. For the record, Fusion is really when a genre fuses with another genre. Most times it comes out sounding like Pop music or Techno/Dance music.
Collabs have always been a part of Soca. But more generally on Remixes and Roadmixes.
My real concern is that when these collabs are recorded, the likely hood of the 2 artists performing the song together live is very slim. You will have songs that are HUGE and will rarely be performed live as recorded. Monster Whiner for example. I bet I can count on 1 hand the number of times that Kerwin Dubois and Lil Rick performed that song together. I was thinking really hard for a time and I can’t even think of one.
I just worry that Soca will lose focus on all aspects of what it takes to be an entertainer. Charisma and Performing are very important and lately many of these artists simply lack that. They are great songs in the studio but live is another story. Let’s not forget that FETTING is the biggest part of SOCA. Focus on songs that can be performed LIVE so the music doesn’t lose it’s essence.
